Voice Siri: Susan Bennett is the Woman Behind Device (VIDEO)

Oct 04, 2013 03:41 PM EDT | By Justin Stock

Two years to the day, the name and face behind the female voice Siri used in global positioning system devices, mobile phones, and other communication systems has been revealed according to CNN.

"I really had to weigh the importance of it for me personally," Susan Bennett told CNN. "I wasn't sure that I wanted that notoriety, and I also wasn't sure where I stood legally," she said. "And so, consequently, I was very conservative about it for a long time.

"And then this Verge video came out ... And it seemed like everyone was clamoring to find out who the real voice behind Siri is, and so I thought, well, you know, what the heck? This is the time," she said.

Bennett made her debut as Siri in Apple's iPhone 4S on October 4, 2011, CNN reported.

The well-known voice recordings were done long before. Bennett did not know the sound files she created during a session with one of her clients as a voiceover actor eight years would be used in dialogue with over 100 million people. Bennett's fame started when she signed a contract in June 2005 with ScanSoft who reached out to her company, GM Voices for help with a project they were doing.

"A colleague e-mailed me [about Siri] and said, 'Hey, we've been playing around with this new Apple phone. Isn't this you?'" Bennett told CNN. "Oh, I knew. It's obviously me. It's my voice."

Aside from her voice over duties, Bennett has co-starred with actor Samuel L. Jackson and actress Zooey Deschanel. She has also provided weather forecasts and restaurant tips, been criticized as useless and answered absurd questions about what she's wearing.

Bennett's big revel might actual spell the end of an era. Siri was phased out with Apple's release of its new mobile operating system, iOS7, which has new Siri voices.
