The Stage Is Set For ‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Christmas Special! Watch the trailer here!

'Sherlock' Season 4 may still be a couple of years in the making but fans can already look forward to the Christmas special later this year.

BBC recently released a full trailer for the one-off episode, promising Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson in the original era that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle intended for them.

According to executive producer Steven Moffat, he and co-producer Mark Gatiss started the whole thing based on a joke.

"As a running joke, we'd always said, 'Should we try to get them into Victorian gear for a scene? Should we do a wee dream sequence, or have them go to a party?'" Moffat previously told Collider in an interview last month.

They eventually wanted to see Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the genius but anti-social detective in the BBC drama, become the "real" Sherlock just once, "to see what it's like."

"We also like the fact that the only other pairing who have done it both contemporary and Victorian were [Basil] Rathbone and [Nigel] Bruce," he continued. "They did both. So, it's just nice to think that Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Martin [Freeman] have done it too."

Fans got an initial feel for the "Sherlock" season 4 Christmas special from the first trailer released a few months ago. Operating as a Victorian gentleman, Sherlock became "less brattish" while Watson became "more uptight."

"It's like we checked the books and discovered we'd set it in the wrong time period by mistake and it's like we're correcting it for 90 minutes," Moffat further told BBC News. "We're really proud of it, we think it's a real cracker. But that'll be it until series four."

"The stage is set. The curtain rises. We are ready to begin," Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes says in the "Sherlock" season 4 Christmas special full trailer. Even without a confirmed release date announced, it looks like they are indeed ready to invade televisions once again.

The special will reportedly air sometime during the holidays but not on Christmas day. In the mean time, watch the trailer below.
