YouTube Music Service Release Date: Subscription Program Expected Before Years End

Oct 25, 2013 04:46 PM EDT | By Justin Stock

YouTube users will soon get a subscription music streaming service that will compete with Spotify Billboard.com reported.

"We're always working on new and better ways for people to enjoy YouTube content across all screens, and on giving partners more opportunities to reach their fans," YouTube said in a statement Billboard reported. "However, we have nothing to announce at this time."

The new service, expected out sometime between now and the rest of the year, will accompany songs with video, and could allow users to play artists' full albums; something the software cannot currently do since artists typically choose one or two of their songs off an album to give to users.

The software will also be available for free, and have a premium version where users will be able to have unlimited access to a complete collection of songs exactly like programming available with YouTube's sister company, Google.

The premium version will charge $10 for the service it hopes is an upgrade from its current offerings.

The free version will be available on demand and give users the ability to listen to songs on all of their devices including their mobile phones Billboard.com reported.

Critics anticipate YouTube's music service will surpass competitor Beats Music's introduction of its own program before the year's end. This however could be pushed back.

YouTube has already obtained the majority of the proper licenses necessary to start its music service thanks to its partnership with Google who also secured documentation for Google's All Access program and a music program for its counterpart.

The social media platform company acquired information from Warner Music Group in March with Sony Music Entertainment, and Universal Music Group coming after.

YouTube is currently a free video service online where users can search for, and find music videos associated with major releases Billboard reported.
