Samsung Galaxy Gear Smartwatch: 800,000 Gadgets Sold to Date

Samsung's Galaxy Gear smartwatch is the world's most bought mobile device on a wrist with 800,000 gadgets sold in its first two months LiveMint reported Tuesday.

"It's the most sold wearable watch available in the market place...and we plan to expand its availability by expanding mobile devices that work with the Gear," said Samsung in a statement.

The device costs $300, and has a OLED screen which gives users the ability to take photos, answer phone calls without using their hands, and receive alerts when they receive messages. The digital watch is also a supplement to the company's Galaxy smartphone.

"(The Galaxy Gear smart watch is a) small green tomato that will eventually grow into a big red tomato, which will herald big opportunities for Samsung and other companies in the industry. I don't know if I'd have bought the first one myself," David Eun, the head of Samsung's Open Innovation Center told The Wall Street Journal.

The news is Samsung's latest development after low sales were expected when the company unveiled the device in September.

"This is probably just to show that the shipments have reached close to 1 million," Doh Hyun-woo, an analyst with Mirae Asset Securities told The Wall Street Journal. "Still, the figure only shows us that people are rarely buying this product given that the Galaxy Note [3] smartphones are expected to average 10 million units in sales per month."

The watch only worked with the Galaxy Note 3, and Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition during its launch. This was changed however when the company added its Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note II, and Galaxy S III to the list of compatible devices.

The devices' communicate with each other via Bluetooth technology. The smartwatch in particular alerts people of messages they are receiving from calls, texts, and e-mails. It also allows consumers to talk without their hands but rather an installed speaker, and take pictures and video through the watches' 1.9 megapixel camera.
