Hershey 3-D Chocolate Printing Soon to Arrive Via 3-D Systems

Hershey and 3D systems are bringing 3D printing to the world soon The Telegraph reported Friday. A date has not be reported.

"Whether it's creating a whole new form of candy or developing a new way to produce it, we embrace new technologies such as 3D printing as a way to keep moving our timeless confectionery treats into the future," William Papa, vice president and chief research and development officer told The Telegraph.

The printer melts chocolate then puts it onto a sugary base in two layers The Telegraph reported.

"This is color jet printing technology which means that it uses an ink jet print head," Liz Von Hasseln told The Telegraph. "So basically it spreads a very fine layer of sugar and it uses an inkjet print head that's just like the one that you would find in your desktop 2D printer to paint water onto the surface of the sugar, and that water allows the sugar to re-crystalize and harden and it forms these complex geometries," Von Hasseln told The Telegraph.

"We're offering what we call the Digital Cookbook with both of these printers and that's designed for the non-CAD user," Von Hasseln told The Telegraph. "They're the first food-safe 3D printers to be offered which is really exciting," Von Hasseln told The Telegraph.

"So you might say, I want to work on a cake topper or I want to work on a drink sweetener and the software will start you out with an object that's kind of the appropriate size and shape and you can add complexity from there," Von Hasseln told The Telegraph. "So you can generate really complex items that are printable without actually having to model them," Von Hasseln told The Telegraph.

Hershey unveiled three new chocolate spreads Thursday a press release reported. The new flavors include chocolate, chocolate with almond, and chocolate with hazelnut the press release reported.

Hershey's over 80 products include reeses, kisses, bliss, special dark chocolate product, kit kat, twizzlers, jolly ranchers, and ice breakers a press release reported. These bring the sweet maker over $6.6 billion in sales according to the press release.

Hershey also makes a milk chocolate bar, syrup, and cocoa the press release reported.

Hershey is expanding globally in China, Mexico, and Brazil the press release reported. Hershey's growth efforts also include the United States and Canada so it can keep a leg up in the market the press release reported.
