School officials reportedly reprimanded students at Portsmouth Middle School for snorting Smarties candies Fox News reported Monday. The action is apparently becoming more and more customary according to My Fox Philadelphia.

More than 12 students have been involved in the area The Daily Mail reported.

The habit is reportedly just as bad as taking in other drugs, and can cause irritation and infection The Daily Mail reported.

"Any kinds of changes in behavior are definitely indications that the child is doing something they may not want the parent to know about," Rebecca Boss, an administrator at State Behavioral Care told My Fox Philadelphia.

"They laugh about it, they say that they've heard of kids doing it, but they don't imply that it's a big problem or that it's something that a lot of people do," parent Bruce Digennaro tom My Fox Philadelphia.

"Where do they get these ideas? You know, can they harm themselves? You know, what will it lead to? They are all concerns obviously," Adrian Markey told My Fox Philadelphia.

The snorting resembles how cocaine is consumed, and related to nasal myiasis where the items taken up through the nose sit on the lining of the nose Fox News reported.

The concept is also related to flies when they produce larvae eggs from within someone's nose when persuaded by the Smarties jammed on the nasal lining Fox News reported.

According to Fox News, children can get unusual tickling inside their nose, and experience a strong odor in the nasal passage of their nose The Daily Mail reported.

Victims can also have discharge, mucus out of their eyelids, and septicemia, a condition where micro-organisms take over the bloodstream The Daily Mail reported.

The incline in Smarty snorting activity dates back to 2007, and maybe longer The Daily Mail reported.

One video from 2010 received 12,000 views The Daily Mail reported.
