AMD Chips: New Opteron Server Processors Good For Enterprise Tasks

Processor manufacturer AMD's newly launched Opteron server processors can accommodate business projects Slash Gear reported Friday.

"In x86, virtualization is the keyword for most business computing these days and these new Opterons seem to be designed to support these kinds of environments by delivering higher memory capacity and better I/O bandwidth," Charles King a principal analyst at Pund-IT told CIO Today. "AMD is doing it at a price that is kind to the pocket book on the Capex side but also delivers energy savings that will be welcomed by many customers on the Opex side as well."

The 12-core and 16-core AMD Opteron 6300 series processors can accommodate business projects, and meet the wishes of AMD consumers CIO reported.

"Opteron was greeted with open arms by the industry and the market when it was first introduced. AMD has struggled a bit with maintaining their position in the server market," King told CIO Today.

The processors can run different software, and fit into different inserts on computers that work with other AMD Opteron 6300 series processors. The Opteron 6370P's speed ranges 2.0 to 2.5 gigahertz Slash Gear reported. The Opteron 6338P runs between 2.3 and 2.8 gigahertz.

"With the continued move to virtualized environments for more efficient server utilization, more and more workloads are limited by memory capacity and I/O bandwidth," Suresh Gopalakrishnan, corporate vice president and general manager of AMD's server business unit told CIO Today. "The Opteron 6338P and 6370P processors are server CPUs optimized to deliver improved performance per-watt for virtualized private cloud deployments with less power and at lower cost points," Gopalakrishnan told CIO Today.

AMD's Opteron 6338P processor costs a minimum $377, and the AMD Opteron 6370P processor goes for $598 CIO Today reported.

Both are available via technology company's Penguin Computing and Avnet CIO reported.
