Last year's fourth fiscal quarter saw Samsung sell 86 million smartphones the droid guy reported Tuesday.

The number is 29.6 million more than the 56.4 million iPhones its competitor Apple sold during the same time period.

"There is clearly now more competition coming from the second-tier smartphone brand. Huawei is expanding swiftly in Europe, while LG's Optimus range is proving popular in Latin America, and Lenovo's Android models are selling at competitive price-points across China," Linda Sui, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics said in a write up CNBC reported.

Huawei and Lenovo came in third and fourth with 16.6 million and 13.6 units sold.

"Apple remains strong in the high-end smartphone segment, but a lack of presence in the low-end category is costing it lost volumes in fast-growing emerging markets such as India," Neil Mawston executive director at Strategy Analytics told CNBC.

"Large marketing budgets, extensive distribution channels and attractive product portfolios have enabled Samsung and Apple to maintain their grip on the smartphone industry," Sui said in the write-up. "(They) will need to fight hard to hold off these and other hungry challengers during 2014," Sui said in the write-up.

Nine hundred and ninety million smartphones were sold in 2013 according to information from The Droid Guy. The number is attributed to the large amount of sales, and people wanting them The Droid Guy reported.

"Among the top trends driving smartphone growth are large screen devices and low cost." Ryan Reith program director at IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker told CNBC.

"Of the two, I have to say that low cost is the key difference maker this is the portion of the market that is driving volume," Reith told CNBC. "Markets like China and India are quickly moving toward a point where sub-$150 smartphones are the majority of shipments, bringing a solid computing experience to the hands of many," Reith told CNBC.
