Salmonella is a bacterial disease that causes diarrhea, fever, and pain in the abdominal area 12 to 72 hours following contamination according to information on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.

Victims have it anywhere from four to seven days, and return to a normal bill of health, not needing treatment the center's website reported.

Some patients may need to seek medical treatment depending on the strength of the diarrehea. This is especially true if the salmonella or salmonellosis expands from the person's intestines, to the veins the center's website reported.

The disease then goes into other parts of the body and eventually leads to death if the person is not on antibiotics the center's website reported.

The disease is most common in children, with those five years old or younger more probable to come into contact with it.

There are 42,000 cases tallied in the United States each year.
