Forklift Twix Retrieval Via Vending Machine Lands Man Out of A Job, Unemployment Benefits

Feb 21, 2014 10:36 AM EST | By Justin Stock

Trying to retrieve a twix candy bar from a vending machine with a forklift at his former workplace cost an Iowa man his job and recently his unemployment benefits.

Robert McKevitt could not get the 90-cent chocolate, biscuit and caramel candy bar out any other way even after attempting to shift it from side to side, and cause it to fall by hitting its edges The Des Moines Register reported Wednesday.

McKevitt put a dollar into the vending machine located at Polaris Industries in Milford, Iowa and saw it move from its spiral spot, but it did not fall.

"I was like, oh, man. So I put in another dollar, and then it wouldn't do anything," McKevitt told The Register.

McKevitt then went and obtained a 8,000 pound forklift according to state unemployment compensation records The Register reported.

McKevitt then managed to get the machine two feet from the ground six times before putting it back on the ground, and after three candy bars had fallen.

"That machine was trouble. They fired me, and now I hear they have all new vending machines there," McKevitt told The Register.

A Polaris Industries supervisor approached McKevitt who told the higher up that he was attempting to obtain the candy bar The Register reported. McKevitt was terminated five days following the fall incident.

McKevitt was in Afghanistan with the Iowa National Guard in 2011, and did not talk or answer questions at his unemployment benefits hearing Dec. 16 The Register reported.

A judge who handles state administrative law did not grant McKevitt unemployment benefits because he did not abide by the supervisors wishes The Register reported. The decision surfaced in January.

According to The Register, McKevitt told the paper that he did not user the forklift to put the machine up, but he rather operated it to re-position the machine on wall.
