Motorola Next to Launch New Smartwatch This Year: Fashionable Tech

Feb 27, 2014 11:27 AM EST | By Staff Writer

Companies are gearing up when it comes to creating smartwatches. Now, it looks like Motorola may be getting in on the game. On Tuesday, it announced that it will build a smartwatch of its own later this year. The product will "solve real user problems" and will be treated like an item of jewelry, according to CNET.

So what exactly should we expect from the Motorola smartwatch? The company stated that it will focus on style and battery life for the new device. But according to The Verge, Motorola's previous efforts with wearable devices, including the MotoACTV activity tracker, weren't known for being either stylish or having a great battery life.

"Right now there are no wearable products that you actually want to wear, and it's because they're all extremely ugly," said Rick Osterloh, vice president of product at Motorola, during an event at the Mobile World Congress on Tuesday, according to CNET.

While Motorola confirmed that the smartwatch is in development, though, the company gave no planned release window, according to Digital Trends. They did state that the system won't run on Tizen, and it's possible that the smartwatch could run on Android.

Motorola is just the latest to announce their smartwatch, though. Pebble and Samsung have a line of Gear smartwatches, and a Google smartwatch build by LG is expected to be announced next month, according to The Verge. There are also rumors of an Apple smartwatch, but we've yet to see these rumors confirmed.

So could we see a fashionable smartwatch? It's possible. We'll have to keep our eye on Motorola as it releases more information about the new device. Until then, all we can do is wait and see what comes out. Hopefully, it's something that we don't mind wearing.
