GM Recalls Another 1.5 Million Vehicles for Airbag Issue and Engine Compartment Fires

On Monday, General Motors recalled 1.5 million vehicles while announcing that it had set aside $300 million in repair costs in the first quarter.

The company stated that it was recalling 303,000 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana from the 2009-2014 model years with gross vehicle weight under 10,000 pounds, 63,900 Cadillac XTS full-size sedan from the 2013 and 2014 model years and 1.18 million Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia models from the 2008-2013 model years, Chevrolet Traverse from the 2009-2013 model years, and Saturn Outlook from the 2008-2010 model years, according to an official release .

"I asked our team to redouble our efforts on our pending product reviews, bring them forward and resolve them quickly," said GM CEO Mary Barra in a statement.

The brake booster pump in some XTS models can lead to engine compartment fires. When it comes to the Enclave, Traverse, Acadia and Outlook, there are problems leading to the non-deployment of airbags. GM plans to have dealers rewire air bag harness connectors for effective deployment.

The recall comes only a month after GM recalled nearly 1.6 million cars for faulty ignition switches, which are now being linked to accidental deaths, according to BBC. Two congressional committees have announced investigations into the lapses. GM has already come under intense criticism when it admitted that it knew about the ignition switch problems

The press release also said that GM would spend nearly $300 million on repairs of 3 million vehicles it had recalled.

"Today's announcement underscores the focus we're putting on the safety and peace of mind of our customers.  We are conducting an intense review of our internal processes and will have more developments to announce as we move forward," said Barra in the news release.
