Facebook Transparency Report: India is Country That Has Most Censorship

Apr 12, 2014 07:54 AM EDT | By Peter R

India has emerged as the country that has the most censorship since it got Facebook to restrict content on 4,765 counts between June and December 2013, the highest for any country.

This came to light when Facebook revealed details of government requests for user data on Friday. While India restricted content more than any other country, the U.S., which made the highest number of requests for user data, did not restrict content even once.

"The good news for Americans is that the U.S. government didn't make a single request to Facebook to censor content. India made the most censorship requests, by far. It asked Facebook to remove 4,765 pieces of content, more than all other countries in the world combined. Turkey came in second with 2,014 requests," IBTimes reported.

US made 12,598 user data requests that pertained to 18,715 Facebook accounts.

While Facebook went a step ahead this time around when mentioning the number of times users data was requested, it said it cannot reveal everything about government requests. One instance is the way it put out figures of National Security Letters which IBTimes described as subpoenas intelligence agencies use to get user data.

"We are limited to reporting this data in bands of 1000. We are required to wait six months to disclose Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) requests," Facebook said while reporting U.S.'s figures.

Bloomberg Businessweek quoted Facebook's general counsel Colin Stretch saying in a blog post that the Menlo Park based company thoroughly reviews government's requests for data and responds only with information restricted to the requesting country.

"We do not remove content from our service entirely unless we determine that it violates our community standards," he said.

ZDnet recapped that Facebook starting publishing its transparency reports last summer when it came to light the social networking giant was one of the conduits for NSA's clandestine data mining program.
