Hannibal Season 3 Spoiler: Hannibal's Past To Be Dissected Including The Very First Time He Witnessed Cannibalism?

Sep 09, 2014 12:55 PM EDT | By Staff Reporter

This new Hannibal Season 3 spoiler has a lot of things that will make you say, "Can the third season arrive, now?" Executive producer Bryan Fuller sat down with IGN and provided lots of exciting tidbits that you'll expect once the show returns on 2015. One of which is Hannibal Lecter's (played by Mads Mikkelsen) very dark past involving his sister. If you think his shenanigans are already scary, you'll be shocked to know what lead him to cannibalism. (Warning: This is a major Hannibal Rising spoiler.)

IGN asked: Are you going to tell the story of Hannibal Rising as written or are you going to rework some of it?

Fuller: We are definitely reworking a lot of it. It's perhaps the book that we reimagine the most for the television series. We see ourselves -- and I think I may have said this to you before -- as the Thomas Harris mashup DJs, where we're spinning tracks of Silence of the Lambs and using lyrics from Hannibal Rising. So we're taking everything almost as though you mixed it in a big, delicious cookie bowl, and now we're plucking out the chocolate chips.

IGN: Is it going to stay true to that origin story in terms of Hannibal witnessing his sister Mischa being cannibalized? That first act?

Fuller gladly answered.

Fuller: Um... True in spirit, I would say. [Laughs] Actually, I think it'll be interesting to discuss this once you've seen the show, but I would say "truer in spirit."

Aside from the sister of our charismatic, elegant cannibal, another Hannibal Season 3 spoiler that Fuller dropped is about the arrival of new characters that were first seen in Thomas Harris' books, Red Dragon and Hannibal. Among them are Inspector Pazzi, from Hannibal, Lady Murasaki from Hannibal Rising, and Francis Dolarhyde from Red Dragon.

Season three is also aiming to explore the past of Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier.

IGN: Ooh! Interesting. I'm wondering if we delve into the psychology of some of the characters that have remained a bit mysterious, like Gillian Anderson's Dr. Bedelia Du Maurier. Do we get into where she's coming from at all, or do we learn anything more about her?

Fuller: Oh, no, that's the juicy stuff for Season 3.
