Have problems doing your business during the day? Have you been sitting in the toilet for over ten minutes now and nothing is coming out?

That is nothing to be ashamed of. Studies have shown that a huge percent of the American population has experienced or are experiencing constipation. Although it is a sensitive topic for some people, it is important to be able to address this issue as long term constipation may lead to serious complications. It may be symptoms of an underlying illness like tumors to the colon. Seek professional help if you are experiencing its symptoms: abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, nausea, vomiting and a significant loss in weight.

Constipation is medically defined as having fewer than three stools per week. In severe cases, some people go as long as having one stool per week. This is normally caused by low fiber intake. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can also cause constipation.

How do you treat constipation naturally? Instead of taking laxatives, you should try a more lasting treatment. Some companies offer sachets of fiber powder to mix with your orange juice or coffee during breakfast. This is a good way to increase you fiber levels but it is so much better to take your fiber through fresh foods. Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. Fruits known to be rich in dietary fiber are raspberries, avocados, blueberries and oranges.

Oatmeal also works wonders for constipation. But you have to drink a minimum of eight glasses a day to help loosen the fiber to ease your bowel movement. For fast relief, try taking a couple of tablespoons of virgin coconut oil. You'll be going straight to the bathroom after an hour or so.

Some research also say that exercise can help you have a regular bowel movement compared to people who live sedentary lifestyle. So don't forget to hit the gym twice or thrice a week just to help maintain your bowel movement.
