The Twitter world and people from the media had a field day when Carlos Manuel Trevino Nunez a local politician from Mexico hurled a racist post against Brazilian football superstar Ronaldo de Assis Moreira or popularly known as Ronaldinho.

According to BBC reports, Nunez was stuck in traffic for two hours because of the arrival of the soccer athlete who signed with the Queretaro FC a Liga MX club seeking its first title. The post which was quickly deleted stated:

“I try to be tolerant but I hate football and the dumbing down it produces. I hate it even more because people block up the streets, making me spend two hours to get home,” said the local politician "And all this just to watch an APE. A Brazilian, but an ape nonetheless."

Football fans took their anger towards the racial slur on social media - the hashtag #TodosSomosSimios (we are all apes) spreading like wildfire. One Mexican tweeted, "What an idiot, hasn't he heard of Darwin?" and included the trending hashtag.

#TodosSomosSimios was used over 50,000 times according to BBC reports. By Monday Nunez released a statement on Twitter, "A sincere apology to @Club_Queretaro for my regrettable remarks... As a person and as a player, @10Ronaldinho has my respect," he wrote.

In an article from Yahoo Sport, Ronaldinho's club which is known as White Roosters of Queretaro issued a statement calling for the politician to be punished.

"After the shameful publication on social media by Mr Carlos Manuel Trevino Nunez insulting our player Ronaldo de Assis Moreira 'Ronaldinho,' we call on the authorities to look into the matter," the statement said.
