Thousands Of Families Evacuated To Safety As Mayon Volcano Continues To Show Signs Of Eruption

Sep 20, 2014 06:26 AM EDT | By Staff Reporter

The Mayon volcano is known for it’s perfect cone-shaped peak and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. Just before dawn of Wednesday, it started to show signs of possible eruption leading government officials to immediately evacuate families within the 6-kilometer radius.

According to Yahoo, Mayon's crater glowed red as molten rocks flowed as far as halfway down its slopes by dawn mid this week. Regional civil defence director Bernardo Alejandro told AFP that about 8,000 out of the 50,000 targeted people to be evacuated were already been moved to temporary shelters.

The area within the 6-kilometer radius remains under Alert Level 3 since an eruption is still highly possible. In a statement from Philvolcs, “The volcano is exhibiting relatively high unrest due to the movement of potentially eruptible magma” and is continuing to emit significant amounts of sulfur dioxide that is hazardous to the health.

Until now, the volcano continues to spew lava and fragments. In an article from Fox News, it states that molten lava has accumulated at the top of the 2,460-meter-high (8,070-foot-high) volcano's crater, creating a glow in the clear night sky Monday.

CNN reports that Mayon has erupted 47 times since the year 1616 and the most devastating eruption took place in 1814 taking the lives of at least 1,200 people.
