Polaroid Has An Answer To GoPro, And Its Simply Adorable

Sep 28, 2014 05:30 AM EDT | By Ana Pascual

Famous for its TVs, LCD picture frames to rebranded Fujifilm Instax cameras, Polaroid reveals the Polaroid Cube - a tiny box-shaped camera capable of capturing high-definition video at 1080p.

Yahoo news describes it as a lifestyle action camera that you can carry around to take hi-def pictures and videos. Though it is said that it can withstand a few drops without a problem, reviewers say that the Polaroid Cube is more of a biking-adventure-kind-of-thing rather than a skydiving companion.

The Minnesota-based company turned to Ammunition for the design of the Polaroid Cube. Senior industrial designer Gregoire Vandenbussche told Businessweek, “With rounded corners and shock-absorbent skin, the Cube is meant to be held—and dropped. “You’re not going to be afraid to hand it to a toddler,” he says, “it’s made to withstand a few drops without a problem” adding, “it’s also water-resistant.”

Robert Brunner, who once worked for Apple and is the founder of Ammunition says, he wanted to make the camera as fun and easy to use as the original Polaroid point-and-shoots.

The Polaroid Cube has a door in the back that can be unscrewed with a coin. Behind it reveals the memory card, a micro USB port for charging the device and for downloading video, and a switch for choosing between 720p or 1080p resolution.

With a camera this affordable, it also includes fewer features. There’s no photo blast or remote control, while the cheapest GoPro offers both. Still, why spend more when the Cube serves its main purpose of capturing pictures and videos. Also, the Cube has a magnet on the bottom attaches to metal surfaces without the need for another accessory making it more convenient to carry around.

The Polaroid Cube is designed with the company’s iconic rainbow stripes wrap around the cube’s soft-touch body and is available in black, blue, and red. We can say that the Cube is the ultimate gift you can buy this Christmas.
