Ryder Cup 2014 Results: Europe Defeats USA For Third Straight Year; Phil Mickelson Blasts Captain Tom Watson

Europe proved to be too much for United States again as they rolled on to a 16.5-11.5 victory in the 2014 Ryder Cup results to claim their third straight victory over their rivals.

European star Rory McIlroy dictated the momentum of the match as the Northern Ireland native started strong for his team before Jamie Donaldson had the finishing touches for Europe, who has now won in eight of the last 10 showdowns.

"It came down to me to close it out, but it's all about the team," Donaldson said in the Ryder Cup 2014 results news via ESPN. "Everyone played their heart out to retain the Ryder Cup. And that's what it's all about."

The result of this year's Ryder Cup was a huge letdown for the Americans again as they were hoping to break their slump, which was the main reason why they brought in Tom Watson.

The 65-year-old Watson, who was the last team captain to help USA win on European soil, became the oldest captain in Ryder Cup, but his experience was not enough to break his team's slump.

Watson drew flak with his moves in the tournament, particularly in the foursome where Europe got seven of the eight possible points.

Phil Mickelson, who was not used on Saturday, questioned why Watson did not go with the tried and tested formula implemented by Paul Azinger in 2008, which was the last time USA won against Europe.

"So we were invested in the process. Unfortunately, we have strayed from a winning formula in 2008 for the last three Ryder Cups, and we need to consider maybe getting back to that formula that helped us play our best," Mickelson said in a Ryder Cup 2014 results interview via New York Times.

Mickelson was referring to the "pod" system of Azinger where the 12 players were divided into three groups of four players, who will train, sleep and practice together to develop chemistry.

When asked about Mickelson's comment, Watson said that he respects the veteran golfer's opinion, but he reiterated that he has a different management philosophy.

"I had a different philosophy as far as being a captain of this team," Watson said. "You know, it takes 12 players to win. It's not pods. It's 12 players."
