Richmond's favorite grocery store, Yellow Umbrella, is set to grow bigger with a new store opening in the Libbie Mill area.

The store is well-known for its variety of groceries. They offer many local products, fresh seafood, and meats. Plus, Yellow Umbrella makes lunchtime convenient with its "Lunch Counter," where customers can grab quick and tasty meals.

Yellow Umbrella Set to Enrich Libbie Mill's Culinary Scene

Thomas Brown, co-owner of Yellow Umbrella, is excited about the store's new location in Libbie Mill. He believes their selection of homemade foods, top-quality meats, and seafood will appeal to locals and professionals in the area.

"Libbie Mill's easy access from Broad Street and Staples Mill, its closeness to Highway 64, and ample parking make it a great spot for our expansion," Brown said

The new store will carry most items at the original location, including hot lunch options like homemade soups and custom-made paninis.

Although the new branch won't have an in-house butcher or fishmonger, it will continue to offer a carefully chosen range of fresh seafood and meats.

This move comes after they acquired Yellow Umbrella and its well-known spot in the Libbie-Patterson area in 2020.

The main store of Yellow Umbrella is located on Patterson Avenue.

This expansion is part of a deal where Yellow Umbrella will take over Stables' assets. The deal is expected to be finalized this week.

The Browns' takeover of the Libbie Mill space marks their ongoing growth strategy. Last year, they purchased the old Blue Bee Cider location in Scott's Addition, transforming it into a restaurant and market named Ballast.

Stables Market, launched in 2021 by Steve Gooch of Juno Restaurant Group, was known for its hot sandwiches, salads, ready-to-eat meals, and various grocery items.

Steven Gooch, the face behind this venture, shared, "We had a great run at Libbie Mill, but it was time for a change." He confirmed the upcoming sale in an email to BizSense, with Jason Savedoff from Filament Business Advisors managing the transaction.

Stables was an extension of Gooch's nearly eight-year-old Museum District restaurant, which he still owns and runs. Recently, Gooch sold another of his Museum District restaurants, the Franklin Inn, indicating a reshaping of his business portfolio.

The Stables Market is located on the ground floor of the Penstock Quarter, a notable apartment building in the Libbie Mill-Midtown development by Gumenick Properties.

Gumenick is working on Harp's Landing, a five-story, almost 400-unit apartment complex. Once completed, this project will increase the total number of residential units in Libbie Mill to over 1,000.

Yellow Umbrella, a family-run business in Richmond, Virginia, stands out for its convenience and quality. Known for its grab-and-go options, the store also provides café and patio seating for a comfortable shopping experience.

At its core, Yellow Umbrella is a specialty grocery store with a passion for food. They are committed to offering sustainably sourced seafood and pasture-raised meats. Their shelves are filled with house-made foods, locally sourced items, and a handpicked selection of wine, beer, and cheese.

Beyond groceries, Yellow Umbrella is also known for its catering services and hosting special events, making it a central part of the Richmond food community.
