In a festive celebration of Valentine's Day, Adaland Mansion welcomed guests to its special dinner event last Sunday, February 11, 2024. These dinners are crucial for the financial support of the historic property.

Karen Larry, a dedicated volunteer at Adaland Mansion, emphasized the significance of such events in ensuring the mansion remains accessible to the public.

Adaland Mansion: Self-Supporting Through Community Support

Adaland Mansion operates through the dedication of volunteers and the steady flow of visitors. It's a self-funded establishment, relying on various yearly activities to cover expenses like utility bills and salaries for the small paid staff.

This approach is key to keeping the mansion's doors open for everyone. The recent Valentine's Day Dinner, priced at $35 per person, featured a delectable menu including roasted honey-basted Cornish hens alongside glazed roasted carrots and parmesan-roasted potatoes.

Larry emphasized that these activities allow them to pay for their utilities and few paid workers.

Those interested in learning more about Adaland Mansion and its upcoming events can find detailed information on the official website, adaland.org.

Additionally, updates and news are regularly posted on the mansion's Facebook page, offering another resource for staying informed about this historic site's activities.

Constructed in 1870, the majestic brick Adaland Mansion is on the National Register of Historic Places. The land's history traces back to 1807, initially settled by the Modisett family. Adding to its historical charm is the barn, erected in 1850 by Uriah Modisett.

Situated near numerous Civil War sites, Adaland offers a rich historical experience. From May through December, visitors can enjoy guided tours of the mansion, wander through the gardens at their own pace, explore a unique gift shop, and, upon request, tour the historic barn.

According to the Adaland Mansion website, the 23-room Greek Revival mansion has undergone meticulous restoration to maintain its authentic charm, showcasing homemade brick and exquisite walnut woodwork.

This architectural gem is proudly listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The property also includes a barn, dating back to around 1850, which has been similarly restored and is accessible to the public during the touring season.

The mansion and its grounds offer a window into the early history of West Virginia. It was once home to two notable figures in the state's history. Augustus Modisett, the original owner, was a distinguished 19th-century landowner, farmer, and county sheriff. He constructed the mansion during the Civil War.

The property later belonged to the Honorable Ira E. Robinson, a West Virginia Supreme Court justice and chairman of the Federal Radio Commission. The mansion is situated on the historic Beverly to Fairmont turnpike, constructed in 1841, adding another layer to its historical significance.

From Donation to Landmark

In 1996, Anker Energy and Sentinel Mine donated the Adaland buildings and 20.3 acres to the City of Philippi to convert the property into a house museum, tourism, and cultural site. Adaland Mansion Development Inc., formed by volunteers and local garden clubs, collaborated with the city to restore the mansion, which opened for public tours and events in 1999.

In 2001, the city handed the mansion's ownership to the non-profit Adaland Mansion Development, Inc., chartered by West Virginia. This 501(c)3 non-profit is managed by a 10-member board and an executive team, including volunteer roles and several part-time and one full-time staff.
