Shoppers at Publix, a well-known grocery chain in the Southeast United States, are upset and calling for protests. They've noticed that the big green scales, a familiar sight at the store's entrances, disappear from various locations.

In 2021, Publix announced plans to gradually remove these iconic scales, a staple at their stores for years. As more customers realize these scales are gone, there's growing discontent and calls for action against the grocery chain.

Publix Scales: A Tradition Since Store's Start

Shoppers at Publix have long been greeted by large green scales, a feature that has been part of the store since it first opened. These scales were introduced as a helpful service for customers when owning a personal scale was expensive and uncommon.

According to a post on Publix's Facebook page, weight scales were rare but costly and bulky 81 years ago. "Back then, checking your weight was something most people did at the doctor's office, or they paid to use a scale at a local store," the post explained.

Recognizing that his customers might appreciate an easy way to monitor their weight without cost, George Jenkins, the founder of Publix, decided to install scales in his stores. This gesture made weight-checking accessible and free for everyone shopping there.

Over the years, while medical experts moved away from using weight as the main health measure, the scales became a fun part of the shopping experience. "It was an instant hit. Customers would start their shopping by stepping on the scale, making a game of guessing their weight," the store shared.

However, the era of Publix scales is nearing an end. The company manufacturing these scales shut down in 2015, signaling a future without this beloved feature. "Although our excellent repair shop keeps our scales in good working order. Eventually, the last Publix scale will have to retire," said Publix in its announcement.

Many of Publix's 1,407 stores are gradually removing their iconic green scales due to maintenance challenges, but the process isn't rushed. "When scales are removed, they're refurbished in our repair shop. They might go to another store or be used for parts," said Lindsey Willis, a store representative, to WPTV.

The phase-out has sparked varied reactions among customers. Some have expressed disappointment on social media, calling for boycotts. "This Publix doesn't have a scale?! Wow," one user posted, while another complained, "I'm at Publix trying to weigh myself. I can't find the scale!" A third suggested, "They're getting rid of the scales in Publix; we gotta boycott this."

Others have criticized the scales for inaccuracies and potential health impacts. One shopper theorized, "Publix scales are giving wrong weights," another doubted their accuracy because they're rarely calibrated. Additionally, concerns about the scales contributing to eating disorders have been raised.

"If you weighed yourself on the Publix scales as a kid, you have body dysmorphia now," claimed a user on the social platform X, pointing out a serious health concern.
