Facebook’s Anonymous App: Secret Identity Exposed – Online Bullies Beware

Oct 14, 2014 12:35 AM EDT | By Adelyn Torralba

Facebook project manager Josh Miller has announced that his team is currently developing an anonymous forum app. He posted a tweetstorm saying that anonymity is secondary compared to the development of the app. What is important is to enable Facebook users to interact and discuss topics with one another without worrying about the use of their real names.

Facebook now has the ability to track your identity even if you want to remain anonymous. Various widgets have been imbedded in your Facebook account in order to identify whenever you make a comment on the various websites you have visited.

The purpose is probably to remove the online trolls, spammers, bullies and other users who are willing to engage in unruly behavior if they think they can get away with if they are anonymous.

A recent post in TechCrunch reported that online comments in Facebook are becoming more civil. The same post also pointed out that the Facebook demand for real identities may also discourage users from participating in controversial topics and discussions.

Another feature that Facebook has been working on for quite some time is the development of software capable of detecting fake profiles and fake friend request. Spammers and trolls will have a hard time overcoming these detectors once Facebook has perfected it.

In theory, Facebook would verify your account and information before you will be able to join a discussion group anonymously. While no one in the online discussion group knows your real name, Facebook knows.

In order for people to participate in this kind of arrangement they must first have complete trust with Facebook about their information. Users who have malicious intent will have second thoughts on using Facebook to do their online misdeeds. Unfortunately, even legitimate users will have problems regarding this Facebook feature. Trustworthiness is not exactly a word that best describes Facebook right now.

Facebook was founded in early 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg and currently has 1.32 billion active users every month.
