Wal-Mart's New Unlimited Shipping Service Delivers Products To Customers Within Three Days

May 13, 2015 08:53 PM EDT | By Michael Smith

Wal-Mart is in the planning stages of launching an unlimited online shipping service later this summer, which promises to deliver products to customers within three days.

The new initiative, which will cost $50 annually, is seen as an attempt to compete against industry rival Amazon, which currently charges $99 annually for its Prime shipping service.

Wal-Mart's new program is temporarily only available for those with special invitations.

"Depending on customer feedback we will see how the programme evolves," Wal-Mart spokesman Ravi Jariwala told Reuters.

There are an estimated 7 million products currently listed on the company's website.

Wal-Mart officials have also announced that the multinational corporation will work closely with China's Alibaba to allow Walmart customers in that country to make store purchases using Alipay Wallet. Alipay Wallet is the mobile payment service maintained by the site.

The new partnership is intended to serve as an incentive for customers to use both companies as intermediaries for purchases.

Alibaba officials mentioned in a statement that the company is looking to "explore further collaborations with the supermarket chain."

In recent years, Wal-Mart has expanded markets across Asia, especially in China. Alibaba, on the other hand, has pivoted much of its business toward North America.
