iPhone 6s Specs: Slightly Bigger, Heavier Than Previous iPhone; What’s With The Weight Gain?

Apple may not have shared much iPhone 6s specs at its Hey Siri event earlier this month but the latest report said the tech firm's newest flagship is actually slightly bigger than the model it replaces and heavier than previous ones.

According to Apple's environment reports, the iPhone 6s is about 11 to 12 percent heavier than their predecessors. The newest iPhone tips the scales at 143 grams - up from the iPhone 6's 129 grams.

To put that into perspective, 2010's iPhone 4 weighed in at just 135 grams. But the iPhone 5s is even lighter at 112 grams.

A stronger aluminium chassis, Cupertino's answer to "Bendgate," would be the culprit for the new iPhone's weight gain for many. But at only 25 grams, that would be a false assumption. The real reason is actually in one of the features that came with the iPhone 6s specs.

The added weight comes from the displays which are now equipped with 3D Touch. As iDigitalTimes pointed out, the feature is a pressure-based technology that allows Apple more options in managing the smartphone's display.

Per Apple's environment report, the iPhone 6s' display is 29 grams. By contrast the iPhone 6 had a 12-gram display. For comparison, the iPhone 5s' display weighed 11 grams while the iPhone 4 had a 7.2-gram display although it was smaller at four inches.

According to iLounge, the added weight accounts for a 10.9 percent increase from the 6s over its predecessor. In the website's comparison, the 6s also came in slightly bigger than the 6.

The report also confirmed earlier rumors that Apple is using a slightly smaller battery in its latest flagship smartphone to save space within the chassis.

Still, the added weight shouldn't bother potential buyers so much.

So far, only storage option and the A9 chip have been confirmed in the iPhone 6s specs list. There is strong evidence however that Apple's may have finally decided to put in 2GB of RAM on their new iPhones.
