Bluetooth Ring Controls Tech: Logbar Reveals Smart Jewelry for Accessing Apps

Mar 06, 2014 09:10 AM EST | By John Nassivera

Logbar Inc. announced it will begin production of the new Bluetooth device called Ring.

Ring features Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity and allows the wearer to control mobile devices and home appliances, according to Gizmag.

By recognizing finger gestures, Ring lets the wearer write text messages by just writing in the air, Mashable reported. Wearers would also be able to access apps by drawing shapes in the air. Someone could access his/her music player by drawing a music note, and drawing an envelope would grant access to his/her email.

According to Daily Mail, Ring is battery-powered and is fitted with motion sensors, a Bluetooth chip, a touch sensor, LEDs and a vibration pad. Wearers activate Ring by pressing a button on the side. Wearers have the option to receive alerts, including new emails or Facebook posts, through vibrations or flashing LEDs, which are located next to the power button.

Pre-installed gestures are also featured in Ring, Daily Mail reported. However, the gestures can be customized with an Android or iOS app.

Ring is designed to be worn on the index finger, and motion sensors are able to identify motions made by the finger once the device is activated, Gizmag reported. GPS technology allows wearers to use the device to make electronic payments at stores and restaurants.

According to Ring's creators, the device has been tested with a variety of other devices, such as iPhones, iPads, Google Glasses, Androids, PCs, smartwatches and home automation devices. Ring has also been tested with web services such as Facebook, Twitter and Evernote. Logbar said smart devices can also help Ring control devices that rely on Wi-Fi connectivity, Gizmag reported.

Logbar has been working with the crowd-funding website Kickstarter to move Ring into production, pushing to begin shipping in July, according to Gizmag. The first round of devices will only be featured in silver, but different sizes will be available with backers. The  $145 pledge level to reserve the Ring has been filled. The $165 amount is currently the cheapest price for the new device.
