Boris & Horton, a trailblazing dog-friendly café in New York City, has announced its closure effective February 26, leaving many pet owners heartbroken.

Esteemed as one of the city's first cafes to welcome dogs, it was more than a coffee place; it was a vibrant community hub for pets and their owners. The unexpected shutdown of this beloved establishment has profoundly impacted its regulars and the local pet-loving community.

Father-Daughter Team's Dream Turns Challenging

In the city's heart, a unique café was born out of a simple wish by a father-daughter duo. The founders of Boris & Horton, named affectionately after their dogs, envisioned a place where they could savor a cup of coffee in the company of their beloved pets. Their goal was to create a relaxing haven for dog lovers like themselves.

However, their innovative idea of a dog-friendly café has encountered its fair share of obstacles and steep expenses. Co-owner Logan Holzmon, speaking to WCBS-TV, a local CBS affiliate, shared some of these challenges. "We need a little bit more space to allow the dogs to play safely off-leash," he explained.

This requirement goes beyond the average café setup, demanding a larger area to ensure the safety and freedom of the dogs.

Moreover, adhering to health department guidelines, the café has had to use disposable plates and cups, adding to operational costs. Holzmon also noted the need for extra staff and cleaning supplies to maintain a hygienic environment for human and canine patrons.

These unique requirements have contributed to the complexity and cost of running such a distinctive establishment, highlighting the challenges of turning a passionate vision into a sustainable business.

The café in East Village and Williamsburg shared the news of its closure through an Instagram post. The owners focused on their positive impact over the years, saying, "Instead of dwelling on what didn't work, let's celebrate the great times we've had as New York's first dog-friendly café."

Their message is reflected on the various special occasions they've been a part of. "From dog adoptions to weddings, gotcha days, birthday parties, and everything in between, we have been so lucky to share your big and little moments."

This heartfelt statement encapsulates the significant role Boris & Horton has played in the community, not just as a café but as a venue for meaningful experiences and milestones.

The announced closure of Boris & Horton, a cherished dog café, has deeply touched its patrons, sparking a wave of support and determination to save the beloved local business. Among the many disheartened by the news are Valerie Cortes and her dog, Goose, who have been regulars at the café.

Cortes shared her fond memories of the café, emphasizing the unique community it fostered. "Goose has a group of friends who come here to play. He even had a big birthday party here with all his friends. I made my friends through him, with his friend's parents," she said.

These connections have made Boris & Horton more than just a café; it is a social hub for pets and their owners.

In response to the impending closure, there's been a remarkable outpouring of support from the café's loyal customers. They have contacted the owners, expressing their willingness to help keep the business running.

Leading this wave of support, Amanda Gerzog, another devoted patron, has taken a proactive step by setting up a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of Boris & Horton. This initiative reflects the community's strong bond and collective effort to save a place that has become a significant part of their lives.
