Amazon to Deliver Groceries in NYC

Oct 20, 2014 03:00 AM EDT | By Flynna Sarah Molina

Grocery delivery option of Amazon will launch in The Big Apple this Friday, according to the company's statement. This will affect the grocery industry as the famous retailer is pursuing its plans of extending its service to East Coast area.

The new Amazon Fresh option, will begin in the area of Brooklyn and expand to its neighboring area. The Park Slope is a famous place for families who are starting out and has huge number of target Amazon fans. There is still no talks on when such service will start in other parts of NYC.

The statement was made following the launch of Amazon service in New York. The Amazon Fresh consumers will make an order in the morning and will be delivered on the same day. Those orders made after 10am will be delivered on the next day. Apart from groceries, electronics and toys and other items are also part of the delivery service.

During the launch, the Amazon fresh will be opened for Amazon Prime members. They will not pay extra charges for the delivery when they avail the service, until the end of this year. However, if they wish to upgrade and get free-of-charge delivery service until 2015, they will need to pay certain amount.

As of the moment, the Amazon Fresh is already open in Seattle and other metro parts of California. However, this launching in NYC is the latest for the brand and is serious in joining the grocery business. Although this grocery entry of Amazon has yet to flourish but this will be a good start for the company to make its presence.

There are already other names in grocery-delivery service in NYC apart from Amazon. Fresh Direct has already been offering service, which is said to earn over $500 million in a year. Google has also such type of delivery option in New York. But it does not include perishable items unlike Amazon Fresh. Other grocery stores also offer delivery service-so it will definitely be a tough start for Amazon.
