There have been many rumors coming out regarding the new actor for "Spider-Man" but the one who bagged the role wasn't even a fan favorite.

After a worldwide casting search, Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures finally announced that Tom Holland will play Peter Parker in the upcoming "Spider-Man" movie, which is slated for release on July 28, 2017.

Last February, there were speculations that the new Peter Parker could either be Dylan O'Brien (The Maze Runner) or Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), but they were too old to be a high school student since the reboot will be set in that era.

There were also reports last March that Mateus Ward (Weeds) secretly auditioned for the Spider-Man role and it was even held at his house.

Last month, the top candidates for the lead role were Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game) and the most recent actor to be mentioned was Charlie Rowe (Red Band Society).

Many people are wondering who Tom Holland is and what made the producers choose the young actor. According to Marvel, the studios and producers Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige conducted an extensive search and were impressed by the 19-year-old actor's performance in "Wolf Hall", "The Impossible", and his latest film "In The Heart of The Sea."

Check out Tom's performance in "The Impossible" below:

"Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world," Amy Pascal said. "With Tom, we've found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man's story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe."

Apart from revealing the lead star of the new "Spider-Man" movie, the producers also announced that Jon Watts will be directing the film. According to the Marvel, the "Cop Car" filmmaker also went through multiple meetings with the studios and the producers before getting the job.

"I've worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent," Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman Tom Rothman said. "For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom's screen tests were special. All in all, we are off to a roaring start," he added.

With two big studios working on the new "Spider-Man" movie, they will definitely choose the best actor and director for this project - and Tom Holland and Jon Watts can become huge stars after the movie gets released in 2017.
