HTC Vive Consumer Version Unveiling At Oct 20 Event? Valve Survey Reveals Users’ VR Experience

HTC has an upcoming event on Oct. 20 that will unveil a new smartphone. Could the Taiwanese company also pull the curtains off the Vive consumer version?

As reported by VR Focus, virtual reality enthusiast InfiniteSix asked the official HTC Twitter account about information on the consumer version of the Vive VR headset.

"The company seems to reply 'Guess you'll just have to wait and see,'" according to the website but the tweet has since been taken down.

InfiniteSix later said he'd be attending the event to which HTC replied, "We'll be stoked to see you there" which for VR Focus "seemingly [acknowledges] the previous conversation."

The website pointed out that HTC didn't mention anything before it unveiled the Vive earlier this year in March.

Back in July, Franchise Herald reported that an HTC exec said they're targeting a mid-October reveal for the HTC Vive consumer version.

Prior to its release date later this year, Valve already has an idea how users plan to use the Vive VR headset. The "Half-Life" developer commissioned an informal survey with 2,000 VR enthusiasts.

42.83 percent of the respondents said they'll be experiencing VR in their bedrooms.

"This is important because it highlights limitations VR game developers should be considering as they prepare to debut their work alongside the first wave of consumer-grade VR headsets next year," Gamasutra said.

32.17 percent said they'll use their bedrooms to set up space for the Vive VR's Lighthouse Room-Scale tracking tech. Only 7.47 percent said they'll use dedicated VR rooms.

According to Gamasutra though, the survey results point to an average floor space of around 8.5 feet x 9 feet. Room-scale can track movement in area up to 15 feet x 15 feet.

42.93 percent of respondents did say that they'll use the Vive with their current computer while 34.01 percent said they'll upgrade their rigs to use it with the VR headset.

The HTC Vive consumer version is scheduled for a release date later this year although the bulk of the shipments won't happen until Q1 2016.
