The New York City Police Department could start wearing Google's connected eyewear Google Glass.

The department's massive and controversial intelligence and analytics unit is looking into seeing if the technology is a viable option for examining terrorists, and assisting officers with putting criminals behind bars according to VentureBeat.

"We signed up, got a few pairs of the Google glasses, and we're trying them out, seeing if they have any value in investigations, mostly for patrol purposes," an official from New York City law enforcement told VentureBeat.

"The Google Glass Explorer program includes people from all walks of life, including doctors, firefighters and parents. Anyone can sign up to become a Glass Explorer, provided he or she is a U.S. resident and over the age of 18," a Google spokesman told VentureBeat.

"Its use for law enforcement and intelligence agencies is doubtful," Vincent Cannistraro, a former ranking clandestine operator with the CIA told VentureBeat. "But I've been wrong before," Canninstraro told VentureBeat.

"We think it could help impact patrol operations in New York City. We shall see," the law enforcement official told VentureBeat.

Google Glass already has many capabilities from game playing to listening to music.

Users can play tennis, a balance game which tests their ability to keep books on their head, clay shooter similar to the infamous duck hunt game, Match which evaluates how well one pairs patches with similar patterns, and Shape Splitter where shapes are broken up information on the blog said.

Google Glass music capabilities allows users to look for songs, review playlists, and hear music files in good quality sound with the device on their head.

Google users can also send friend requests to three of their close acquaintances, and listen to music.

Introduction into optometry offices is also a possibility Tech Crunch reported. This would be done through VSP or Vision Service Plans which gives Google employees health care benefits for their eyes.

Google launched its own version of headphones specifically made for the connected eyewear at $85 in December CNET reported at the time. The news is also the company's latest development for the product since it announced it is constantly working to improve it for consumers.
