Southwest to Discontinue AirTran By Years End; Shifts Focus to More Service Areas

Southwest is doing away with its AirTran company this year The Orlando Business Journal reported Monday.

The change is expected around the time fall changes to winter or after The Business Journal reported.

"We are pleased with the rapid improvement of our developing markets as we convert AirTran routes into Southwest and optimize our combined networks," Gary Kelly, chief executive officer told The Business Journal.

The airline's shift is part of its plan to offer service in locations other than its current 48 states The Wall Street Journal reported.

Southwest is currently discontinuing service to and from Branson Airport in Hollister, Mo., Jackson-Evers International Airport in Jackson, Miss., and Florida's Key West International Airport. Southwest June 7, 2014 according to a press release on the airline's website.

Southwest upped its passenger flow 25 percent, and took ownership of AirTran's quarters in Atlanta which includes a business center for travelers; something Southwest did not have before the deal.

Southwest also acquired space at Washington' Reagan National Airport, and put gates at New York's LaGuardia Airport. Prices were also expected to remain low.

Southwest is offering special discounts on flights in June including New York's LaGuardia Airport, and Minneapolis the press release reported.

Ninety-nine dollars gets passengers to Akron-Canton from New York's LaGuardia Airport the press release reported.

Flights to Detroit from Atlanta, and Pittsburgh to the same destination cost $109. Atlanta to Minneapolis is $129.

Orlando from Akron-Canton will be priced at $139. San Diego to Orlando, and San Diego to New Orleans will be priced at $149. Southwest is also offering more flights out of LaGuardia the press release reported.

The flights to and from San Diego are also part of the airline's recognition of its 32nd anniversary flying in and out of San Diego's Lindbergh Field.
