Spotify, Uber Collaborate For Car Music Playlist

Nov 18, 2014 01:27 AM EST | By Jane Galvez

Spotify announced Monday their partnership with the ridesharing service app Uber.

In the blog post, Spotify announced that users can hear their playlist once they got on the car they rented through Uber. The app lets users find music-enabled Uber service that will let them play their selected playlist.

"When you request a car, you'll be able to choose the music you want to hear on the journey. When your ride arrives, it'll be your tunes on the car's speakers," said Spotify in the blog post.

The application will start rolling out in 10 cities starting Friday, November 21, and globally in the coming weeks. Spotify users with Premium accounts in iOS and Android, though with limited features, can use the feature.

London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, Nashville, New York, San Francisco, Singapore, Stockholm, Sydney and Toronto are the 10 launch cities to first try to the Spotify and Uber partnership.

As part of promotion, users in the 10 launch cities can connect with Spotify's ten artists-namely Andrew W.K., The Sam Willows, Ximena Sariñana, Ansiktet, Professor Green, Diplo, Matt and Kim, Ricki Lee, Kevin Drew and Jake Owen.

However, users can only play their playlists only in Uber cars that are Spotify-enabled. Uber's chief executive Travis Kalanick said that the driver retains control on the volume of the music.

"For Uber it's the first time we've personalised the experience inside the car. For music lovers that's nirvana - it's a really awesome place to be," said Kalanick.

There has been a lot of criticisms over Spotify's free account little distinction from premium accounts. The partnership with Uber adds to their defense that a premium account has more features.

Complete Music Update's business editor Chris Cooke's told BBC, "But by offering extra functionality like the in-car listening with Uber, Spotify might be able to persuade more people to upgrade to premium despite having a very generous freemium offer."

Spotify said the blog post that they will be posting more details.
