Uber Halts Operations In Nevada

Dec 01, 2014 05:54 AM EST | By Jane Galvez

Ride-sharing service Uber suspends business in Nevada, after the court issued a preliminary injunction prohibiting the operations statewide.

The district court judge released the restraining order on Uber, after a case against the ridesharing app was taken to court on Nov. 24.

Uber arrived in Nevada on Oct. 24, and face difficulties with the Taxicab and Transportation Authority from the start. In the first month of operation, it was reported that 50 Uber-related cars were impounded.

The opposition says that Uber must follow the same guidelines and restrictions as other taxi companies. Insurance companies, on the other hand, demand for the drivers affiliated with Uber to carry insurance policies.

On a blog post published on Thanksgiving, Uber said, "Unfortunately, there is some confusion about ridesharing and how uberX is helping provide a completely new model to meet Nevadans' transportation needs. In light of a recent court decision, we are temporarily suspending service as we evaluate a path forward."

According to the blog, 1,000 people will be affected by the injunction. Uber said the company has provided means for individuals and families to supplement their earnings through being part of the ridesharing service.

Uber spokeswoman, Eva Behrend, said it's unfortunate how Nevada becomes the first state in the nation to suspend the service.

"We remain committed to working with Nevada's leaders to create a permanent regulatory framework that affords Nevadans the flexibility and innovation offered by Uber," said Behrend.

Uber calls for their supporters to help them on their mission to bring back the ridesharing service to Nevada. As of writing, it has already garnered 18,296 signatures.

"Las Vegas and Reno are home to tens of thousands of people who have been clamoring for more reliable ways to get around their city. With Uber, they finally had a ride when they needed one--but now they are being left at the curb," the petition said.
