Microsoft has bought Mojang, which is the company behind the famous game, Minecraft. The purchase did not come as a surprise as there have been rumors about it before it actually took place, but what came as a surprise was the purchase price. The rumors predicted that the price would be $2 billion, but Microsoft paid $500 million more than that.

Microsoft executives are excited about the development. Gaming is an activity done on all kinds of devices. Gamers use desktops, laptops, game consoles and mobile devices. Billions of hours are spent on gaming every year and  Microsoft is looking to expand there by getting hold of one of the most popular games.

By gaining control of Minecraft, Microsoft is adding to their line of popular games. They already have control of other hits like Halo, Fable and Forza. Experts in the industry believe that Microsoft's purchase is aimed at driving users to its mobile device platform business.

Minecraft is considered to be one of the most popular games in history. It ranks highly when it comes to popularity for the different platforms.

Plans for Minecraft

Experts in the gaming industry believe that Microsoft has big plans for using Minecraft. Last year alone players of the game clocked in 2 billion hours. What is even more exciting is how the Minecraft player community is still growing. A great number of the paid players signed-in within the past 12 months. They are also known to be very loyal which means that Microsoft can expect to earn a great deal from them.

Microsoft plans to continue with how the developers of the game handled it in the past. They would still make it available on the multiple platforms on which it is currently available. Those platforms include Xbox, Playstation, PC and iOS.
