Colorado's Pueblo County raked in over $32,000 in marijuana from sales in January from personal sellers according to tax information submitted Friday The Pueblo Chieftain reported Tuesday.

The municipality taxes sales for the substance 3.5 percent bringing revenue to slightly below $1 million The Chieftain reported.

"The irony is that the only new revenue we have coming in is in marijuana and yet we have to open a new judicial building." Liane "Buffie" McFadyen, a Commissioner told The Chieftain.  "We're going to have to sell more weed."

With every income comes added expenses, which in this instance includes $70,400 for licensing during the first month including stores that sell Marijuana for recreation, and medical purposes The Chieftain reported.

The amount also includes the costs for licenses, and updating existing ones.

Sellers earned $32,643, a number that details revenue the state of Colorado gathers for its marijuana tax. Colorado gives back 15 percent of its earnings from the 10 percent tax it puts on recreational marijuana The Chieftain reported.

While complete numbers will be available in March according to the Colorado Department of Revenue, not all figures have been prepared, but projections give the state $93,000 and Pueblo County $14,000.

Pueblo County also has a one percent sales tax levy for every item purchased, which Colorado also collects money from.

This brings the total dollar amount for marijuana used for recreation to $56,000 in January, when the substance became available for purchase.

According to The New Zealand Herald, Pueblo County is considered one of the few municipalities near Denver to permit stores that sell marijuana on a recreational basis.

"We recognize that the eyes of the world are watching us, and we are proud to have erected a robust regulatory environment in Pueblo County," Sal Pace, commissioner for Pueblo County told The Herald.
